Coffee, the How and Why.

Can I get a 5 shot Venti Americano please? A phrase that is so familiar to me. While standing in the que at the airports Starbucks, I think about how much I love coffee but I also realise, looking around at the other patrons, how a lot of people don't know why they drink it. So let me explain.

Coffee, as we all know contains high quantities of caffeine an energy boosting drug. What people don't realise is that the energy doesn't just come from thin air. Caffeine produces an chemical that blocks certain signals to the brain, putting part of the brain on high alert which forces it to open up and drain your adrenal glands. This is where we get that buzz from. This also means to get the full effects of coffee you need to drink it in the correct intervals, if your drinking it for its properties, as it takes time for your adrenal glands to refill however this process can be helped with a dose of Ginseng. Having pretty much the opposite effect of coffee on your adrenal glands, Ginseng can give a small speed boost to refilling them. This is why energy drinks contain caffeine and ginseng, along with a combination of other substances, but what they don't realise is that the 'energy' received, doesn't last long because they cancel each other out within an short period of time which is why we "crash" when it wears off.

So there you go, a quick insight to the science of coffee. I kinda wonder how I come to know all of this. But anyway, until next time, carry on cooking.
